{"id":1429,"date":"2019-03-22T18:11:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T18:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coolblues.bcmultistaging.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=1429"},"modified":"2026-01-20T21:34:35","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T21:34:35","slug":"grants-boost-research-nutrition-epigenome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/kobor-lab\/2019\/03\/22\/grants-boost-research-nutrition-epigenome\/","title":{"rendered":"New grants boost research into nutrition and the epigenome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"fndry-paragraph fndry-text-intro22\">BC Children\u2019s Hospital and University of British Columbia researchers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/research\/find-a-researcher\/michael-steffen-kobor\/\">Dr. Michael Kobor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/research\/find-a-researcher\/yvonne-lamers\/\">Dr. Yvonne Lamers<\/a>, are leading two new international projects investigating the relationship between diet, the epigenome and health thanks to almost $900,000 in funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">These projects \u2013 the only two awarded funding through CIHR\u2019s Team Grant: Nutrition and the Epigenome competition in January, 2019 \u2013 will further research in the emerging field of epigenetics and contribute to the development of new approaches to improve care for nutrition-related diseases and better understand how to help kids in BC and beyond live long, healthy lives. Both projects were submitted as part of the Joint Program Initiative (JPI) Healthy Diet Healthy Lifestyle (HDHL) call for Biomarkers for Nutrition and Health.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">In epigenetics, researchers investigate how an individual\u2019s experiences, diet, environment and more, can influence whether genes are \u201cturned on\u201d or \u201cturned off\u201d \u2013 potentially impacting critical stages of development in early infancy and lifelong health.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 25%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Kobor received $445,400 over three years for his project \u201cNutriPROGRAM.\u201d Through this project, Dr. Kobor and researchers in Germany, Netherlands, Spain and the UK are working to discover how the diets of young children can change their metabolism and health later in life.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/kobor-lab\/files\/2025\/01\/Kobor-Michael-March-2017.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2035 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/kobor-lab\/files\/2025\/01\/Kobor-Michael-March-2017.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/kobor-lab\/files\/2025\/01\/Kobor-Michael-March-2017-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/kobor-lab\/files\/2025\/01\/Kobor-Michael-March-2017-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<div  class=\"fndry-container fndry-responsive-bg fndry-responsive-border fndry-pt--3 fndry-pb--3 fndry-pr--md-1 fndry-pl--md-1 fndry-pt--sm-0 fndry-pb--sm-0 fndry-mt--sm-3 fndry-mb--sm-3\">\n\t<div class=\"fndry-row\">\n\t<div  class=\"fndry-col fndry-responsive-bg fndry-col--12 fndry-col--sm-12 fndry-col--md-12 fndry-pl--sm-0\">\n\t<div  class=\"fndry-container fndry-responsive-bg fndry-responsive-border fndry-pt--3 fndry-pr--3 fndry-pb--3 fndry-pl--3 fndry-pt--sm-2 fndry-pr--sm-2 fndry-pb--sm-2 fndry-pl--sm-2\" style=\"--fndry-bg:var(--fndry-color-light)\">\n\t<figure  class=\"fndry-quote fndry-quote--left\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"fndry-quote__quote\">\n\t\t<p class=\"fndry-text-intro22\">\u201cIf we can pinpoint how nutrition during infancy makes its mark on DNA, we can better assess a child\u2019s potential health risks later in life.&#8221;<\/p>\t<\/blockquote>\n\t<figcaption  class=\"fndry-quote__citation\">\n\t\t&#8211; Dr. Michael Kobor\t<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">\u201cIf we can pinpoint how nutrition during infancy makes its mark on DNA, we can better assess a child\u2019s potential health risks later in life,\u201d says Dr. Kobor. \u201cWe are thrilled to have the opportunity to utilize these international collaborations in the pursuit of additional projects and research excellence here at BC Children\u2019s Hospital Research Institute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">Dr. Kobor is the lead of the Healthy Starts Research Theme, and an investigator at BC Children\u2019s Hospital. He is also an investigator at the Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics, a professor in the UBC Department of Medical Genetics, Sunny Hill BC Leadership Chair in Child Development, and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Social Epigenetics.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 25%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Lamers is the international lead for the project &#8211; &#8220;EpiBrain: Epigenetic effects of B-vitamins on brain health throughout life: scientific substantiation and translation of evidence for health-improvement strategies.&#8221; CIHR contributed $450,000 of around $1 million internationally over three years. Together with colleagues in the UK and Spain, Dr. Lamers is investigating how B-vitamins in the first 1000 days of life can change the epigenetics related to cognitive development and brain function in childhood.
