{"id":1384,"date":"2018-04-18T21:14:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-18T21:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/navyblue.bcmultistaging.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=1384"},"modified":"2026-01-05T19:54:49","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T19:54:49","slug":"isas-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/lavoie-lab\/2018\/04\/18\/isas-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Isa&#8217;s story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"fndry-paragraph fndry-text-intro22\">It\u2019s not every day that you get a visit from a patient that you worried might not make it.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">Last month, eight-year-old Isa Guerrero and his family paid a visit to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/plavoie\">Dr. Pascal Lavoie<\/a>&nbsp;and his research team at BC Children\u2019s Hospital Research Institute. Dr. Lavoie is a BC Children\u2019s Hospital investigator and neonatologist at BC Children&#8217;s and BC Women&#8217;s Hospital + Health Centre.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">In 2009, Isa was a patient of Dr. Lavoie\u2019s in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at BC Women\u2019s. Isa was born prematurely at 28 weeks gestation, weighing only 849 grams. As most newborns do, Isa lost weight during the first few days and dropped to 770 grams, falling into the category of micro-preemie.<\/p>\n\n<div  class=\"fndry-container fndry-responsive-bg fndry-responsive-border fndry-pt--3 fndry-pb--3 fndry-pr--md-1 fndry-pl--md-1 fndry-pt--sm-0 fndry-pb--sm-0 fndry-mt--sm-3 fndry-mb--sm-3\">\n\t<div class=\"fndry-row\">\n\t<div  class=\"fndry-col fndry-responsive-bg fndry-col--12 fndry-col--sm-12 fndry-col--md-12 fndry-pl--sm-0\">\n\t<div  class=\"fndry-container fndry-responsive-bg fndry-responsive-border fndry-pt--3 fndry-pr--3 fndry-pb--3 fndry-pl--3 fndry-pt--sm-2 fndry-pr--sm-2 fndry-pb--sm-2 fndry-pl--sm-2\" style=\"--fndry-bg:var(--fndry-color-light)\">\n\t<figure  class=\"fndry-quote fndry-quote--left\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"fndry-quote__quote\">\n\t\t<p class=\"fndry-text-intro22\">Isa not only survived but gained weight and thrived, quickly earning the nickname \u201clittle superstar\u201d from Dr. Lavoie.<\/p>\t<\/blockquote>\n\t<figcaption  class=\"fndry-quote__citation\">\n\t\t\t<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">Through his care from Dr. Lavoie and the NICU team, Isa not only survived but gained weight and thrived, quickly earning the nickname \u201clittle superstar\u201d from Dr. Lavoie.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">Isa spent a month in the NICU and returned to BC Children\u2019s for follow-up appointments for the first few years of his life. As the years passed, Isa continued to grow and flourish, hitting milestone after milestone.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">During his visit to the BC Children\u2019s Hospital Research Institute, Isa learned about the research that Dr. Lavoie and his team do to find ways to protect infants born prematurely like Isa, from infection-related complications in the NICU and from deadly viruses during the first year of infancy.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s not every day that you get a visit from a patient that you worried might not make it.
