Hammond Lectureship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"fndry-paragraph fndry-text-intro22\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/research\/find-a-researcher\/megan-levings\/\">Dr. Megan Levings<\/a>, a world leader in the field of immunology and a respected mentor and visionary at BC Children\u2019s Hospital, has been awarded the 2019 Geoffrey L. Hammond Lectureship.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">The Hammond Lectureship is BC Children\u2019s Hospital Research Institute\u2019s highest honour. Named for Dr. Geoffrey Hammond, the Research Institute\u2019s first scientific director, this award is given to a senior investigator who has made a significant impact on improving the health and well-being of children and families, served as a role model and mentor to junior researchers, trainees and students, over the last 10 years and provided leadership to the BC Children\u2019s research community.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"fndry-heading\">Mentor, teacher, leader<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 35%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a description that fits Dr. Levings to a \u201ct\u201d \u2013 or should we say \u201cT-cell\u201d? Since moving to BC Children\u2019s from the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute in 2011, Dr. Levings has trained more than 50 students, published more than 100 scientific papers and cemented her status as an international expert on the therapeutic potential of regulatory T cells. Beyond this, she has trained successful scientists and doctors who have since gone on to be leaders in universities, hospitals and industries all over the world.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"626\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/levingslab\/files\/2019\/10\/megan-levings.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2359 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/levingslab\/files\/2019\/10\/megan-levings.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/levingslab\/files\/2019\/10\/megan-levings-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/levingslab\/files\/2019\/10\/megan-levings-768x534.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"fndry-heading\">A Treg pioneer<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">Dr. Levings developed a passion for immunology during her graduate training in genetics with Dr. John Schrader at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Then, as a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Maria Grazia Roncarolo\u2019s lab in Italy from 1999-2002, Dr. Levings made critical discoveries about the function of regulatory T cells (Tregs) \u2013 a type of white blood cell that helps regulate the body\u2019s immune responses.<\/p>\n\n<div  class=\"fndry-container fndry-responsive-bg fndry-responsive-border fndry-pt--3 fndry-pb--3 fndry-pr--md-1 fndry-pl--md-1 fndry-pt--sm-0 fndry-pb--sm-0 fndry-mt--sm-3 fndry-mb--sm-3\">\n\t<div class=\"fndry-row\">\n\t<div  class=\"fndry-col fndry-responsive-bg fndry-col--12 fndry-col--sm-12 fndry-col--md-12 fndry-pl--sm-0\">\n\t<div  class=\"fndry-container fndry-responsive-bg fndry-responsive-border fndry-pt--3 fndry-pr--3 fndry-pb--3 fndry-pl--3 fndry-pt--sm-2 fndry-pr--sm-2 fndry-pb--sm-2 fndry-pl--sm-2\" style=\"--fndry-bg:var(--fndry-color-light)\">\n\t<figure  class=\"fndry-quote fndry-quote--left\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"fndry-quote__quote\">\n\t\t<p class=\"fndry-text-intro22\">In 2001, Dr. Levings was one of the first to show that human Tregs could be isolated from blood and expanded in the laboratory. Importantly, her work showed that the regulatory power of these cells could potentially be harnessed to treat or even prevent immune-mediated diseases.<\/p>\t<\/blockquote>\n\t<figcaption  class=\"fndry-quote__citation\">\n\t\t\t<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">This discovery laid the foundation for Dr. Levings\u2019 future work which has expanded our knowledge of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that dictate Treg function and guided their testing as a therapy that could replace conventional immunosuppressive drugs. She is currently the lead for the Childhood Diseases Research Theme at BC Children\u2019s, which includes more than 90 scientists studying various aspects of childhood diseases and disorders. She also has a leadership role in the TRACE program (TRAnsplantation and CEll Therapy) which is implementing cell therapy at BC Children&#8217;s and establishing the infrastructure needed to realize the vision of harnessing the natural properties of the immune system to replace conventional immunosuppression.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"fndry-heading\">An inspiring role model&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">As a mentor to the next generation of scientists, she has trained three high school students, 24 undergraduate students, two Masters students, 15 Doctoral students, two clinical trainees and 12 Postdoctoral fellows. Her mentees have held many prestigious scholarships and her lab&#8217;s alumni can be found all over the world as scientists in industry and academia or, as one example, the Chief Scientific Officer of JDRF Canada.<\/p>\n\n<div  class=\"fndry-container fndry-responsive-bg fndry-responsive-border fndry-pt--3 fndry-pb--3 fndry-pr--md-1 fndry-pl--md-1 fndry-pt--sm-0 fndry-pb--sm-0 fndry-mt--sm-3 fndry-mb--sm-3\">\n\t<div class=\"fndry-row\">\n\t<div  class=\"fndry-col fndry-responsive-bg fndry-col--12 fndry-col--sm-12 fndry-col--md-12 fndry-pl--sm-0\">\n\t<div  class=\"fndry-container fndry-responsive-bg fndry-responsive-border fndry-pt--3 fndry-pr--3 fndry-pb--3 fndry-pl--3 fndry-pt--sm-2 fndry-pr--sm-2 fndry-pb--sm-2 fndry-pl--sm-2\" style=\"--fndry-bg:var(--fndry-color-light)\">\n\t<figure  class=\"fndry-quote fndry-quote--left\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"fndry-quote__quote\">\n\t\t<p class=\"fndry-text-intro22\">As the head of Childhood Diseases, Dr. Levings has shown incredible commitment and support for all those around her. Her consultative approach to leadership and efforts to enhance research translation for all childhood disease-related research at the institute have earned the respect and admiration of her peers and colleagues.<\/p>\t<\/blockquote>\n\t<figcaption  class=\"fndry-quote__citation\">\n\t\t\t<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">Dr. Levings&#8217; passion and excellence as a researcher, colleague, mentor and leader have made her a true role model and inspiration to everyone on the BC Children\u2019s campus.
