Insulin is an important hormone that regulates the amount of sugar in your blood. Without insulin, blood sugar levels can spike, leading to serious health problems or even death if not treated. People with T1D need insulin every day to live and be healthy. Previously known as juvenile diabetes and insulin-dependent diabetes, current data show that more than half of all new cases of type 1 diabetes occur in adults.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"fndry-heading\">What immune cells &#8216;eat&#8217; could provide answers to T1D<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/research\/find-a-researcher\/bruce-verchere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr.\u00a0Bruce Verchere<\/a>, researcher in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bcchr-drupal.qa.caorda.com\/diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Childhood Diabetes Laboratories<\/a>\u00a0and Director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bcchr-drupal.qa.caorda.com\/about-us\/how-we-support-research\/core-technologies-services\/CMMT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics<\/a>\u00a0at BC Children\u2019s Hospital, along with fellow researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/research\/find-a-researcher\/megan-levings\/\">Dr.\u00a0Megan Levings<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcchr.ca\/research\/find-a-researcher\/ramon-klein-geltink\/\">Dr.\u00a0Ramon Klein Geltink<\/a>, are leading a<a href=\"https:\/\/cihr-irsc.gc.ca\/e\/52093.html#ab15\">\u00a0$2 million study funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research<\/a>. Dr. Levings is a world-leading immunologist and Dr. Klein Geltink is an expert in immunometabolism, an emerging field that examines the relationship between immune cells and the nutrients that fuel them. Together with their colleagues, the team is doing a deep dive into why the immune system attacks islet cells \u2014 the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin \u2014 and how metabolic pathways are involved.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 25%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one has looked at the immune cells that attack the islets to really try to understand what is happening between the two. For example, implanting insulin-producing cells grown from stem cells. But Dr. Verchere counters that those new cells don\u2019t change the underlying autoimmune condition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">\u201cWe can only get to a real cure by getting to the fundamental reason why diabetes occurs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">Hosak says that is precisely why she\u2019s so excited about being involved with this project.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">Since getting diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 15 years ago, Ramya Hosak has been told many times that a cure is coming. Yet it always seems to be another five years away.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">\u201cThis new area of research addresses the uncertainty of how type 1 diabetes actually happens. Trying to explain to her 20-something-year-old friends why she couldn\u2019t just go out at 10 p.m. for a late night of drinking was a challenge. It has brought a lot of meaning to my life. I met my husband and made life-changing friendships!\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">The group\u2019s main goal is to provide a social network for people living with T1D during and after their transition from the pediatric system into adulthood. Increasingly, those patient voices are also advocating for research to reflect their concerns.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">Dr. Verchere and the study team are listening. They consulted with patients while preparing the project proposal and made adjustments to address patient priorities, which included a focus on understanding how diabetes impacts women\u2019s health, such as risks in pregnancy. Researchers are now differentiating between male and female cells as much as possible in each part of the project.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">Hosak attends study meetings, provides feedback on the research methods and the language that is used in study documents, and guides the communication of results and knowledge translation.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"fndry-paragraph\">\u201cSpending time with people living with T1D makes you very aware of the impact of the work we are doing.
