Translational Genetics Research Collaborative:
Advancing justice-oriented personalized medicine

Vision

To be world leaders in applying a justice-oriented approach to personalized medicine, with a focus on mental health and genetic counselling.

Mission

We model exceptional teamwork with a commitment to inclusion and personal growth. We conduct rigorous research to learn respectfully from, and advocate for, underserved people, families, and populations with the goal of driving evidence-based improvements to clinical practice. Through modeling and active knowledge exchange at all levels, we inspire growth in genetic counselling, mental health, and health services research to transform clinical practice.

Definitions

Justice-oriented: We seek to center the principles of justice in the work that we do by supporting fair and equitable access to power, opportunities, resources, and rights.

Personalized medicine: is an approach for management, treatment, and prevention that takes each person’s variability in genes, environment and lifestyle into account. Genetic counselling is an application of personalized medicine.

Genetic counselling: is a psychotherapeutic process of helping people to make meaning of genetic information, and to use that information in alignment with their values, needs and wants to manage their health in the context of uncertainty.

Land acknowledgement

Our team is based in Vancouver or k’emk’emeláy – which is the name given to this place by the Squamish nation – it means place of many maple trees. The Squamish nation share this as Traditional, unceded ancestral territory together with other Coast Salish Peoples, including the Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

As settlers on this land from various places around the world, we recognize that we are uninvited guests here. We are grateful to the original guardians of this land, and commit to continuing to learn about, honor and celebrate the history and teachings of the people of the place we work and to bringing an antiracist lens to all of the activities we engage in.
