We have several active projects in the following areas:
1. Understanding the molecular basis of cell adhesion receptors and associated proteins in modifying therapeutic response in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This work encompasses the cell death and immunomodulatory effects of the integrin-associated ‘eat me’ protein calreticulin, and the ‘don’t eat me’ protein CD47.
2. Interrogating the tumour microenvironmental sources of stimulatory cytokines that promote the aggressive transformation and treatment resistance of the childhood brain tumor, medulloblastoma.
3. Modeling for precision oncology at BCCH. This project is a multi-investigator led initiative that encompasses a bedside-to-bench approach to molecularly characterize a child’s tumor to identify particular vulnerabilities for therapeutic intervention. The Lim lab employs the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model as for PDX generation and for testing particular drug susceptibilities.

Every day, our researchers work towards breakthroughs to transform the lives of kids in BC and around the world. Learn about our latest innovations and advancements in child health.

When a child’s cancer returns after conventional treatment, families often find themselves in uncharted territory — scared, exhausted, and grasping for answers. But thanks to a remarkable collaboration between researchers, clinicians, and national research networks, new pediatric cancer treatment options are emerging.

A pan-Canadian team has developed a new way to quickly find personalized treatments for young cancer patients, by growing their tumours in chicken eggs and analyzing their proteins.

Unlike adult cancers, which are often linked to lifestyle and environmental risk factors, the cause of many childhood cancers remains unknown. While advances in research and care have greatly improved chances of survival, cancer remains the second-leading cause of non-accidental death among children in Canada.
At BC Children’s, we are making discoveries that save lives and transform health care for children in our province and around the world. Our research portfolio includes basic, clinical, population, and public health research.
