DOI: 10.1016/j.jpurol.2011.02.031Cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) is a noninvasive prenatal test (NIPT) that analyzes maternal blood to detect fetal genetic material. Since direct access to the test was available to the pregnant women via commercial companies, there was an increasing number of women using cffDNA for “gender” determination. At the same time, there was also increasing reports about “misdiagnoses.” It was recognized in the medical community that there is a lack of evidence-based methods for validating cffDNA for gender determination, of accuracy of the information provided by Internet-based companies, and of consumer education regarding possible incorrect results and/or disorder of sex development (DSD) detection. This study was designed to systematically review, assess and compare currently available online information about cffDNA as a tool for prenatal diagnosis.
Complications and mortality are frequently measured as surrogate markers for quality of care, which is why resources are heavily mobilized to measure and reduce postoperative complications and mortality. However, there has been accumulating evidence that failure to rescue (FTR) may be a better quality indicator than isolated complications and mortality outcomes. In the pediatric surgical population, FTR has been studied in a limited fashion. This study aims to determine the rate of FTR in the pediatric surgical population and to assess if number and type of serious complications are associated with FTR.
The 2011 American Academy of Pediatrics Urinary Tract Infection (AAP UTI) Guidelines are controversial, particularly related to voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) ordering. Knowledge and adherence to the guidelines may vary by specialty. Among pediatric specialists, the current study aims to evaluate: 1) Attitudes towards the 2011 AAP UTI guidelines, 2) Reported application of the guidelines using a hypothetical clinical scenario.

Every day, our researchers work towards breakthroughs to transform the lives of kids in BC and around the world. Learn about our latest innovations and advancements in child health.

Isabella Parrotta hasn’t quite decided yet where her life will go after she finishes her kinesiology undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia later this year. She’s mulling over medical school or physiotherapy, but right now, the 22-year-old wants to keep her options open.
At BC Children’s, we are making discoveries that save lives and transform health care for children in our province and around the world. Our research portfolio includes basic, clinical, population, and public health research.
