Investigator, BC Children's Hospital
Sunny Hill BC Leadership Chair in Child Development

My research program aims to address key pressure points at individual, family and community levels, by combining big data methods with qualitative, family-centered approaches, encompassing equity-directed goals to provide a comprehensive picture of healthy child development for all, but especially children with disabilities and complex care needs. It will be conducted in collaboration with HELP UBC and Sunny Hill Health Centre faculty and clinicians, involving community of parents and service providers, and engaging trainees. This innovative alignment of methodologies will advance health research in BC and contribute to continuous and adaptable improvement of the well-being of children with disabilities.

Are early learning and poverty-reduction policy investments associated with improved early childhood outcomes in Canada?

Funded by a SSHRC Insight Grant this project investigates whether poverty-reduction and early learning policy investments are associated with improved early childhood outcomes in Canada. The overarching objective of this research is to fill a gap in our understanding of how federal and provincial policies impact early child development and learning outcomes The pan-Canadian perspective is enhanced by the fact that the study’s co-investigators and collaborators come from BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia. We are using timing of the implementation of the enhanced Canada Child Benefit as a marker for comparisons of children’s outcomes on the EDI, also considering provincial changes in kindergarten policy such as introduction of the full-time learning.

Social determinants of health’s unique role in the well-being of children with special health needs

This theme combines several past, ongoing, and potentially future research projects. We have established that children with special health needs are more likely to live in socioeconomically poorer neighbourhoods and that there are similar social gradients in their developmental outcomes as those that exist among children without special health needs. Among several conditions, we have explored the role of social determinants of health at the population level in the school-entry development of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, those with asthma, with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder. In a current project, we are addressing the impact of the special education designation on academic trajectory from kindergarten to high school in Ontario.

Understanding the worlds of children under 3 years of age: Global Scales of Early Development (GSED), Observe, Reflect, Improve Children’s Learning (ORIC) and Toddler Development Instrument (TDI)

The expansion of global application and accountability in the transition to Sustainable Development Goals spurred the networks of researchers, practitioners, and agencies to ensure child well-being, development and education were included in relevant new goals’ targets and indicators. Several new ways have been developed to explore the worlds of young children - – locally, globally; to assess development and early childhood experiences; relying on input from parents and educators. They are guided by the holistic nature of concepts of health, development and well-being in early childhood and its implications for creation of informative yet comprehensive evidence to inform policy and practice across settings, cultures, and geographies. The ongoing work on projects includes concurrent and predictive validity (GSED), influencing practice (ORICL), and reflecting community engagement (TDI).
