Stephanie K.A. Wong

MD

Investigator and Pediatric Rheumatologist, BC Children's Hospital

My main clinical research focus area include childhood onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE). cSLE is an autoimmune disease often presenting with more severe symptoms and involvement of the kidneys compared to adult patients. I am interested in disease outcomes, mental health, sexual and reproductive health and adolescent health of these patients. As this chronic disease can affect long-term health morbidity, I am striving to take a proactive role in improving outcomes as well as quality of life for these patients.

An additional research priority includes transition from pediatric to adult care as well as improving access to specialized care in rural areas across the province. Through my current Master of Public Health studies, with a specialty in Indigenous health I hope to incorporate my education into outreach and research efforts that improve culturally safe health care for these patients. My goal is to ensure that public health programs and healthcare systems better support young people and their families — including Indigenous communities — as they navigate this critical stage of life.
