Edmond Chan

MD, FRCPC

Investigator, BC Children's Hospital Research Institute
Head, Division of Allergy, Department of Pediatrics, University of British Columbia

Dr Chan throughout his research career has focused primarily on food allergy. As of May 2024, he has published over 197 peer-reviewed publications with many other manuscripts in development, and was co-author of several national/international guidelines on food allergy (including the first Canadian guidelines on food oral immunotherapy and several guidelines on the primary prevention of food allergy such as the 2017 NIH (NIAID) peanut allergy prevention guidelines). He was also co-author on American guidelines on the management of eosinophilic esophagitis. Broad research projects for Dr Chan have included safety and effectiveness of oral food immunotherapy in preschoolers, sublingual food immunotherapy in older children and adolescents, epicutaneous peanut immunotherapy, food allergy-associated anxiety tool development, the EoE registry, and a variety of other food allergy research topics. Dr Chan has been on the board of directors of the Canadian Society of Allergy & Clinical Immunology (CSACI) since 2010 and joined its executive in 2020 (he is currently Vice-President and will be President starting Nov 2024), and was the recipient of its Jerry Dolovich Award for being a leader/role model (2017) and its F. Estelle R. Simons Award for research (2020). He is on the Executive of the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) Allergy Section, Food Allergy Canada’s healthcare advisory board, and the steering committee for Canada’s National Food Allergy Action Plan.

Honours & Awards

(2017/10) Jerry Dolovich Award, Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (CSACI), presented to a member who demonstrates excellence in clinical work, teaching, and research, and serves as a leader and role model in our specialty. Youngest ever recipient of this award.

(2019/10) Food Allergy Canada's Robyn Allen Leadership Award: the Robyn Allen Leadership Award is given annually to an individual who has made a unique contribution to the lives of Canadians living with severe allergies through their efforts in education, advocacy, community building, leadership, or fundraising. The award is in memory of Robyn Allen, a beautiful young girl who passed away from an allergic reaction. Although a food allergy to peanuts triggered the response, it was lack of awareness that led to her death.

(2019/12) MSA (Medical Staff Association) President’s Award, BC Children’s Hospital, highest award given by Medical Staff Association for achievements in all clinical and academic domains

(2020/10) F. Estelle R. Simons Award for Research, Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (CSACI), presented to a member in recognition of his or her exemplary research in the field of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. To be considered for this award, the candidate’s research should be viewed as significant and of benefit to the Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology community.

(2022/09) Donald Stark Award for Excellence in Leadership; Canadian Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Foundation. This award was created in 2021 to honor Dr Donald Stark. It recognizes an individual who has demonstrated leadership excellence in research, education or clinical care and has advanced the field of Allergy Asthma and Clinical Immunology in Canada.
