Calling all elementary school teachers in Campbell River and surrounding communities! Experience the excitement of health science—right in your elementary school classroom!
Science Explorers is a free, hands-on science program for elementary students, designed to spark curiosity, build science literacy, and help students see themselves as the next generation of scientists, innovators, and problem-solvers.
Students won’t just learn about science, they’ll experience it! Students will –
- Explore science through hands-on learning experiences.
- Meet real-life science superheroes from BC Children’s Hospital and have the opportunity to ask questions about their work.
- Discover science in everyday life and explore how science helps us understand the world around us.
- Explore health research and learn how research can improve the lives of children, families, and communities.
- Think like a scientist by asking questions, investigating ideas, and solving problems.
- Imagine future possibilities and discover careers in science, health, research, and beyond.

Who are the Science Explorers? Scientists, researchers, health professionals, and other members of the BC Children’s Hospital community. They’ll share what they do, how they got there, and what it’s like to work in science and health. Team members are confirmed closer to the program date based on availability.

Who can participate?
Any elementary school in Campbell River and surrounding communities. Activities are tailored to the age and grade level of the students to ensure an engaging and meaningful experience.
Science Explorers is offered in English only.
What to expect?
Every classroom is different. Activities and language are adapted to students’ age and grade level, and we’re happy to adjust the content, activities, or pace based on your students’ needs and interests.
What do teachers need to do?
Teachers help coordinate the session time and location and are asked to remain in the classroom during the visit. Our team takes care of the activities, materials, and setup. No lesson planning or special technology is required.
What does the curriculum look like?
Our curriculum includes a variety of short, interactive activities exploring science, health, and the human body.
Activities and content are adapted to suit the age and grade level of your students. We typically spend about 10 minutes on each activity or topic, allowing students to explore several different ideas during the visit.
You know your classroom best! We’re happy to adjust the activities, content, or pace to meet the needs and interests of your students.
What else do I need to know?
- Hands-on & interactive: Students will take part in hands-on activities, demonstrations, and discussions designed to get them thinking and exploring like scientists.
- Classroom Size: There is no maximum class size. Science Explorers is designed for individual classrooms to maximize interaction between students and the Science Explorers team. However, we can work with schools to accommodate larger groups or multiple classes in spaces such as a gymnasium or library.
- Age-appropriate: Activities, content, and language are adapted to the age and grade level of your students.
- Length: Visits are typically 30 to 60 minutes long. We keep things moving with short activities, usually spending about 10 minutes on each activity or topic.
- Materials: Our team will bring everything needed for the activities. No preparation is required from teachers.
- Technology: No technology required. Activities are designed without the need for a projector, computer, or internet connection.
- Space: Students can participate from their desks/tables or in a space that allows them to move around. Our team will adapt to your classroom setup.
- Teacher involvement: You know your students best! Teachers are asked to remain in the classroom during the visit but will not be expected to lead or participate in the activities. Your presence helps our team understand and respond to your students’ needs.
- Accessibility: We’ll work with you to make the visit a great fit for your students. Please let us know about any accessibility, learning, or classroom considerations in advance so we can plan accordingly.
Science Explorers is completely free for elementary schools. There is no cost to the school or teachers to participate.
Interested?
Request a visit from the Science Explorers Team starting fall 2026. The request form will be posted on this page in late fall and will close once all available spaces are filled.
Space is limited to 12 classrooms. While we’ll do our best to accommodate all interested teachers, visits will be scheduled to include as many different schools as possible and create a balanced program schedule.

- Your name, email and school name
- Classroom details, including the number of students, grade level, and any curriculum connections you’d like us to consider
- Confirmation that your school administration or principal supports bringing this program to your classroom
- Your preferred session time on Thursday, April 8, 2027 (morning or afternoon)
