A pan-Canadian program involving University of British Columbia and BC Children’s Hospital researchers is one step closer to improving prevention, diagnosis and treatment of concussions in youth sport, thanks to $12 million in funding from the National Football League’s scientific advisory board.
Spinal surgeries in children are incredibly complex procedures with little room for error. When these operations are successful they can restore children with severe scoliosis and other painful and debilitating conditions back to health, but mistakes and complications can lead to long hospital stays, the need for further surgeries or lifelong disabilities.
On average, almost 10,000 children visit the emergency department at BC Children’s Hospital for injuries each year. For the last 20 years, a research program at BC Children’s Hospital has made considerable contributions to try to stop kids from getting hurt.
