My research focuses on preventing, diagnosing, and managing concussions and musculoskeletal injuries, and examining how these injuries affect cognitive function, movement, and overall physical health. I study these effects across diverse populations, including children, older adults, athletes, and survivors of intimate partner violence-related brain injuries. In addition, my work focuses on developing ways to teach motor skills and improve motor control, particularly in individuals with neurological conditions such as stroke and Parkinson’s disease, and neurodevelopmental conditions including autism, developmental coordination disorder, and cerebral palsy.

Teaching safe soccer heading mechanics in children aged 7-12 years old

This project focuses on teaching children how to perform soccer heading in a way that reduces the risk of concussion. Heading involves direct contact between the head and the ball, and in young players, improper technique and limited control of the head and body may increase exposure to potentially harmful impacts. The project examines how children position and stabilize their head, neck, and body during heading, and how instruction and practice can be designed to reduce unnecessary head movement and impact forces.

Reducing Concussion Risk During Falls in Women

This project focuses on reducing concussion risk during falls, a common cause of brain injury in women. Falls often involve sudden, uncontrolled head and body motion, increasing the likelihood of head impact. Using principles of motor learning, this research develops and evaluates strategies to teach safer responses during loss of balance. The project examines how the head, neck, and body move during these events and identifies ways to improve protective movements. The goal is to develop practical approaches that reduce head impact and support injury prevention in real-world settings.
