My research focuses on the pediatric workforce and variations in pediatric health services depending on rurality. I am interested in examining geographic and other disparities in the pediatric health system and in identifying gaps in service in rural, remote, underserved communities. I hope to contribute objective data about the challenges of recruitment and retention in rural regions in order to develop a clearer, more evidence-based understanding of the pediatric workforce. My goal is to lend evidence that can inform a workforce strategy which supports children, youth and families in all communities, through development of training and health systems which align with the needs of the population.

The Changing Geography of Pediatric Care: A Temporospatial Analysis of Pediatrician Distribution in British Columbia, 2013- 2023

British Columbia (BC) Ministry of Health data and reports for 10 years (fiscal years 2013/2014 to 2022/2023) provided data that enabled the determination of the number of general pediatricians working in each of BC’s health service delivery areas (HSDA). The number of pediatricians each year by HSDA and the pediatrician to population ratio based on the number of citizens under age 18 was calculated, and rural versus urban HSDAs were compared. This study provides clarity about the geographic distribution of pediatricians in BC and identifies disparities between regions. The project will continue, with plans to evaluate the data again in approximately 5 years.

Financial analysis of the impact of enhancing pediatric services in rural British Columbia

This study will focus on British Columbia’s Northern Health region, as it is the most rural, remote and least resourced health region in BC with respect to pediatric services. The study will undertake a detailed financial impact analysis of increasing the capacity for pediatric in hospital care for children with acute medical illnesses in Northern Health (NH). A second arm of this study will involve a financial and service impact analysis of the introduction of virtual child and youth mental health and substance use (CYMHSU) services across NH, including access to virtual assessments by child and youth psychiatrists for eligible children/youth. These financial analyses can support the development of a provincial health care system that is more equitable for children and youth living in remote, northern communities.

What are the factors that keep Canadian pediatricians in rural or remote communities?

This study will survey pediatricians from across Canada who live and work in rural, regional or remote settings, or who have left rural practice, asking them about the factors which impacted their decision to either remain in or to leave rural practice. This data will provide insight into factors that may be key to the effective retention of rural or regional pediatricians.
