My research harnesses methodology from clinical and counselling psychology, health psychology and public health to understand intersectional risk and resilience factors that contribute to the development of psychological distress in parents and children. My research aims to refine and disseminate psychological interventions to improve parent and child mental health, with a focus on co-developing mobile health (mHealth) interventions (i.e., psychological support provided by mobile devices) that can best engage traditionally underserved populations. I also strive to shift public policy to create greater accessibility of mental health interventions and to identify targets for reformation of recruitment, training, and retention of diverse and culturally competent clinician scientists.

My program of research seeks to uncover the mechanisms through which stressors (e.g., discrimination, poverty) impact health, and find ways to effectively intervene. In particular, I am interested in (1) understanding the mechanisms through which stress and mental illness transmit from parents to children, and (2) developing and disseminating interventions to interrupt this transmission of stress in at-risk populations. This has included co-development of mobile health (mHealth) interventions (i.e., psychological support provided by mobile devices) that can best engage traditionally underserved populations. My research harnesses methodology from clinical and counselling psychology, health psychology and public health, and attempts to shift public policy to create greater accessibility of mental health interventions. I also strive to identify targets for improving recruitment, training, and retention of diverse and culturally competent clinician scientists.

Current Projects

My research interests focus on psychological and social factors that promote or detract from optimal health trajectories. I am currently a co-PI on the longitudinal Pregnancy during the Pandemic Study. I have a line of research that investigates sociodemographic and racial disparities in health, with a particular interest in sleep. I am also interested in the transition to parenthood and the development of preventative interventions that optimize mental health in parenting.

Pregnancy During the COVID-19 Pandemic

I lead the Pregnancy During the COVID-19 Pandemic (PdP) cohort study. The first paper from this large-scale investigation has been cited over 420 times since June 2020, making it one of the highest impact papers in psychology in 2020. I am particularly proud of the impact my work has had on policy, I presented results from the PdP study to the parliamentary health research committee in 2020; and my recent work with the national advocacy group, the Canadian Perinatal Mental Health Collaborative, has been heavily featured on policy documents aiming to establish a national perinatal mental health strategy. One of the most note-worthy accomplishments of my career was being able to present to the Canadian Parliamentary Health Research committee about the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of pregnant people.
