Rising Scholars Summer Studentship Application

For students from equity-denied communities who are interested in participating in the Summer Student Research Program and seeking a salary and housing to support their research placement.

There are three types of applications for the Summer Student Research Program (SSRP):

The Summer Student Research Program is intended for students with limited research experience who are looking to build foundational research skills. It may not be the best fit for students with extensive prior research experience.

The information below applies to the Rising Scholars Summer Studentship Application.

Application Details

The Rising Scholars Summer Studentship is dedicated to creating more inclusive opportunities in child health research. This program provides funding and hands-on research experience to undergraduate students from equity-denied communities, who may not otherwise have the means or access to participate in summer research placements.

The Rising Scholars Summer Studentship includes:

  • Funding: A salary stipend as well as support for travel and living expenses in Vancouver, BC from Monday, May 31, 2027 to Friday, July 30, 2027.
  • Research Experience: Placement on a research project focused on advancing child health research. We will do our best to match students with their areas of interest identified on the application, but available projects and placements vary each year.
  • Professional Development: Enrollment in the Summer Student Research Program.
  • Mentorship: Guidance from world-class researchers in the field of child health.

How to Apply

Step #1: Verify your Eligibility

You are eligible to apply if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • BC or Yukon resident: You are a resident of BC or the Yukon
  • Location: Your permanent/home residence, when you are not attending university, is outside the Greater Vancouver/Fraser Valley region.
    Students who return home during the summer to live in following communities are not eligible for this award: Abbotsford, Anmore, Bowen Island, Burnaby, Chilliwack, Coquitlam, Delta, Harrison Hot Springs, Hope, Ladner, Langley, Lions Bay, Maple Ridge, Mission, New Westminster, North Vancouver, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Richmond, Surrey, Tsawwassen, Vancouver, West Vancouver or White Rock | Additional Details
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident: You are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident with a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) issued from Service Canada and are eligible to work in Canada.
  • Equity-denied community: You self-identify as a member of an equity-denied community that have faced collective barriers in accessing opportunities and resources.
  • Financial need: You demonstrate the necessity for need-based funding to access the training and resources necessary to achieve your educational goals.
  • Undergraduate student: You are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at a recognized post-secondary institution at the time of application.
  • Summer availability: You are available to live in Vancouver and from May 31, 2027 to July 30, 2027.

You’re not eligible to apply if you:

  • Are an international student.
  • Are not a resident of BC or the Yukon.
  • Have a permeant/home residence in the Greater Vancouver/Fraser Valley region when you are not attending university.

  • Are a (1) high school students, this includes grade 12 student who will begin university in Fall 2027, (2) graduate student or (3) medical student.
  • Have previously received a Rising Scholars Summer Studentship.
  • Are not available to live in Vancouver and work full-time from May 31 to July 30, 2027.
  • Are planning to submit a Summer Studentship Application.
  • You do not self-identify as a member of an equity-denied community – the program is specifically for students from communities that face systemic barriers to accessing education opportunities due to structural discrimination, marginalization, or exclusion.
