Research

Canadian Perinatal HIV Surveillance Program (WHRI)
Dr. Sauvé recently took over as co-chair of the CPHSP, which as done active surveillance for vertical transmission of HIV in 22 sites across Canada since 1990. It is funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada. This surveillance program prospectively collects data on all births to HIV infected women in the 22 participating sites, as well as all vertically HIV infected children in Canada. It provides important epidemiologic data on vertical transmission of HIV in Canada. Data is presented annually at HIV meetings and in 2012, there was a major article in AIDS (completed prior to when Dr Sauvé joined the team).

Flocked swab evaluation
In this study which is in the final manuscript stages, Dr Sauvé and her co-investigators prospectively evaluated two methods of acquiring samples for respiratory virus testing, comparing the BC Children's Hospital standard of nasopharyngeal wash, to a newer technology: flocked nasopharyngeal swabs.

Immunization Monitoring Program, Active
Dr. Sauvé is the BC site investigator for this project which has ongoing surveillance for vaccine preventable diseases and adverse events following immunization; there are 12 sites across the country. She sits on the AEFI and Haemophilous Influenzae working groups. Nurse monitors at each site do active surveillance for the target conditions, finding all hospitalized cases of those target conditions using a variety of methods. Data is entered into the IMPACT databases which are coordinated through the Vaccine Evaluation Center's IMPACT data center (led by CFRI investigators Dr. David Scheifele and Dr. Julie Bettinger). Summarized surveillance data is provided to the Public Health Agency of Canada and published in peer-reviewed publications.
