Dr. Laura Beresford’s research areas include understanding how to best support pediatric patients with an organ transplant transition from pediatric to adult care, studying the pharmacokinetics of immunosuppressants (how medication travels through the body) in pediatric patients who have received an organ transplant, and studying the safety and effectiveness of medications in pediatric patients living with kidney disease or who are on dialysis, and pediatric patients receiving intravenous (IV) medications that treat infections at home.

Exploring Youth and Young Adult Transplant Recipient Perspectives on the Acceptability of a Text-Message Based Education Platform
Youth and young adulthood are significant, high-risk periods of transition for transplant recipients, and there is a critical gap in targeted, accessible health education services to support this age group. Adolescence is a transformative developmental period of significant psychosocial change, cognitive growth, increased desire for independence, and risk of poor health outcomes. Education to foster youth health knowledge and confidence is essential, and there is a current gap in mobile health (mHealth) interventions to support this population. This study aims to explore the perspectives of youth and young adults with solid organ transplants on the acceptability and relevancy of a one-way SMS text-messaging based education platform to support transplant health knowledge and health confidence.Risk Factors for PICC Line Occlusions in a Pediatric Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) Service
The Pediatric Intravenous Outpatient Therapy (PIVOT) program at BC Children’s Hospital supports children around British Columbia who require a prolonged course of IV antimicrobial therapy and allows them to receive it at home. The PIVOT program was started in 2023, and line occlusions is a significant complication that impacts patient care. This study aims to identify factors associated with PICC line occlusions in pediatric patients receiving outpatient intravenous antimicrobial therapy through the PIVOT program, with the goal of informing a clinical framework to guide antimicrobial selection and reduce line-related complications.GrantsCo-Investigator.
