The Summer Student Research Program fosters research awareness and interest for undergraduate and medical students. Each week, students will receive an email bulletin about upcoming events and their available formats. Attendance will be recorded during each session.

The summer curriculum features a program orientation along with workshops, networking opportunities, and faculty and student presentations. Please see the pages below to find the full session descriptions.

Session Formats

Students will have up to three ways to participate in the Summer Student Research Program. The available formats of each activity will be specified in the program calendar, session descriptions and weekly bulletins.

  • In-Person: Students working onsite will be able to attend sessions directly at BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute, allowing them to participate in hands-on activities and engage with speakers and other students.

  • Virtually: For remote students or those who cannot attend in-person, they can watch certain sessions virtually in real-time. If a virtual option is available, students can find the Zoom link in the weekly bulletins or calendar. The sessions will be in Zoom Meeting format (webcams and mics are enabled).

  • On-Demand: For students who cannot attend a session in real-time, they can watch recorded sessions on their own schedule. While some sessions will be available on-demand and posted in the Video Library, not all activities will have this option due to facilitator preference or unexpected technical difficulties. Sessions that will not be recorded will be stated in the weekly bulletins and calendar. To have on-demand sessions count towards your attendance, students will need to watch at least 80% of the session. If you have any questions about your watch time, our team can help confirm it with the Zoom metrics.

Attendance Requirements

How many sessions do I have to attend during the summer program?

To be eligible to participate in Poster Day and/or receive a certificate of program completion, students are required to participate in at least 5 sessions in June, and at least 5 sessions in July. Students can participate in-person, virtually or on-demand.

For BCCHR-funded students, this attendance requirement is mandatory. Funding may be withdrawn if participation is limited.

How do you track your attendance record?

In-person participants will need to sign-in at the registration table located in the session location. For virtual participants, please ensure your full name and email on your Zoom account are updated.

Students watching on-demand from the Video Library will need to register their details to access each Zoom recording. As our team tracks the watch time of these recordings, students will need to watch at least 80% of the recording to have it count towards their attendance.
