Advancing Transplantation Outcomes In Children (ADVANTage)

Project Summary

This is a Phase II randomized, controlled study. A Phase II study is undertaken after preliminary safety testing on a drug or treatment. It is usually conducted on a small number of individuals (100-300 persons), and its goal is to begin to find out what effect it has on your transplant status and to further evaluate its safety.

The purpose of this study is to see if a new combination of immunosuppressive drugs, Belatacept and Sirolimus, better preserve kidney function and prevent development of antibodies that can lead to a severe form of rejection when comparing to the standard treatment of MMF (mycophenolate mofetil).

This study will include about 200 children and young adults from 18 clinical sites across North America. In Canada approximately 1 site and approximately 8 children will participate in the study. No adults will be included in the study in Canada.

This study is being funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Enrolment Eligibility Criteria

You may be able to participate in this study if:

  • You are 6 to 18 years old
  • You will receive a living or deceased donor kidney transplant

You will not be eligible to participate in this study if:

  • You are currently pregnant
  • You are unable or unwilling to comply with study protocol
  • You have a history of malignancy
  • You have previously had an organ transplant
  • You have an active infection or viremia
